Madrona Labs Aalto sketchbook is a collection of compositions made with the Aalto softsynth designed by Randy Jones.
I really appreciate the level of knowledge and care that Randy put into the design of this synthesizer. It's clear to hear that Aalto's design is influenced by some of Don Buchla's synthesizers with it's Complex Oscillator, Lopass Gate, Waveshaper etc. But it's important to recognize that this design is not trying to be a virtual version of an analog synth, you can see that in the way the user interface is designed, it's very digital you will not see any "virtual" knobs or patch cables. Aalto is a very well thought out modular synthesizer. It really feels like a complete instrument as apposed to being a software synth, this helps push you into a very creative mindset. The patching is done in a more flow chart style of patching that I find very intuitive and great for people that are just getting into learning the functions of modular synthesizers.
The compositions on this project are experimental in nature and influenced by synth composers like Morton Subotnick and Charles Cohen.
I wanted to demonstrate that Aalto can get you into similar sonic territory as the Buchla and other modular synthesizers. I also enjoyed being able to translate my patching style I use with analog eurorack synth in some of the pieces.
All the patches from this project are available to download and install in your copy of Aalto to experiment with in your own compositions. You'll find the XML text document in the lyrics of each song just copy and paste it into your copy of Aalto
I hope you enjoy my patch design and compositions on this project.
and try out the demo and if you like... and i know you will! Please support Madrona Labs and purchase a copy of this amazing instrument.
