Smoke Signals

Shiro Fujioka is to Modbap, what Kool Herc is to Hip-Hop
When this Los Angeles born and raised inner city Sadhu
moved to Sedona AZ for a few years, during his time in the high desert
he started putting together an analog
modular synthesizer and experimenting with frequencies.
Given his background as a beat maker starting out on the Akai MPC60II
in the early 90’s and later becoming a turntablist that co founded the
worlds first internet formed DJ crew, Muzik Fiendz with DJ Ragz.

Shiro has never been a stranger to innovation, He’s one of the artist spearheading the Modbap movement along with Cory Banks (@bboytechreport) who is the artist that made up the name
Modbap (@modbap) and is one of the founding fathers and creative
contributors to the analog modular synth branch off the boombap tree.

Smoke Signals is a throwback to how Shiro used to produce his
turntablist mixtapes back in the 90's, you can still find some of them online, search
DJ Shiro 1210 Techniques: A Scratch Odyssey on youtube.

Shiro's approach to Modbap is the evolution, of digging in the crates for records and chopping samples. He still, samples vinyl and chops loops on this project, but the songs are one take live improvised beats, He’s playing and rearranging the samples on the fly, blended with bass frequencies, rhythmic bloops and blips, mixed with bass heavy beats from his Elektron Machinedrum to keep the repetitive element of rhythm, while introducing spontaneity into HipHop similar to how an MC freestyles off the top of the head.

Stay tuned for Shiro’s upcoming Modbap LP coming soon.
